Power Exchange

I did a radio show last month, and during our chat I kept using the term "power exchange" when the host was clearly more familiar with the term "BDSM." She seized on the idea of power exchange, commenting that it was a much more appropriate term in a lot of ways.

I have to agree. BDSM is a word with so many limiting assumptions. Bondage? Well, sure, but we don't all use that. Dominance and submission? Well, that's a little more common but again, there are those who bristle at the idea of submission to describe what it is that they do. Sado-masochism? A lot of people in the lifestyle will tell you "no thanks. I don't take pain with my BDSM."

Power exchange is somehow a less confining term. Power exchange can describe the dance of dominance and submission, but also the pleasure and playfulness of being a switch. Power exchange can hint at bondage but also the other types of restraint people use--protocols, restrictions, contracts and rituals. Power can mean bringing someone pain (as in sado-masochism) but also using other types of power. The power of pleasure, the power of manipulation, the power of control that has nothing to do with standing over someone with a whip.

One of the really great things about BDSM or power exchange or whatever it is that we do is that there are so many valid ways to do it, so many creative and connecting techniques people have developed in their quest to become closer to their partner(s) in the lifestyle. I think the term "power exchange" gives all of us a little more room to breathe.

I won't call for the end of our lifestyle's familiar acronym, but rather remind people that a lot of disparate things can seed and bloom under that canopy. Isn't that a wonderful thing?

What does control mean to you? Is it mental? Emotional? Physical? Is power a subtle trait or does it declare itself with loudspeakers and riot gear?

I'll tell you the truth: I find genuine control with locks and keys way hotter than voluntary control. Why, I can't tell you. If everything is about willpower, and the sub/slave's desire to serve, it's just -- meh. I know a great many people feel differently, which is fine.

This relates to something I've been pondering. There are a number of reviews and commentaries on As She’s Told that describe Maia as willing to do whatever, to please Anders. And I've had to think about why that doesn't resonate with me. Yes, Maia wants to please Anders; yes, his pleasure makes her happy and secure. He even notices how hard she works to stay open to what he's doing to her, despite her fear. But she isn't choosing to do what she’s told in order to please Anders. She’s not the active party. Anders is choosing what she does, to please himself. She's handed that power over to him, and now if she doesn't fully cooperate, she gets punished. There are consequences. The "doing it to please him" idea is a misreading of the power dynamic.

Both Maia and Etrin struggle against something that won't budge. That is one definition of helplessness, and genuine for me; what can I say? Hardware needs to have a purpose, or it's meaningless. Real locks and keys mean genuine helplessness, not just when the dom is there but all the time.

Of course, there are many other ways to configure a power dynamic. The subtle version can be unnervingly effective, and potentially just as abusive as the physical version. I think sometimes about Grandcourt’s cruel and casual power over Gwendolen In George Eliot’s Daniel Deronda. Grandcourt never doubts his right to own and control his wife exactly as he pleases. Nineteenth-century male dominance with a flavour of psychopathy. And he never lays a hand on her, or even threatens violence; he doesn’t need to.

So I do understand power in its subtler versions. It just doesn’t happen to turn me on. Thoughts, anyone?

Kinky Kiss and Tell: Eve Sloan from Eve: Portrait of a Submissive by Steve Maser

Steve Maser’s interview with Eve Sloan, heroine of Eve: Portrait of a Submissive.

(Author’s note: This interview took place in December, 1976)

What's your favorite ice cream?

(Laughs) I suppose that's meant as an icebreaker. Chocolate sundaes. I love ice cream but Roger only lets me have it occasionally. He doesn’t want me to get fat. It’s like a special privilege, but then everything I get to do is a privilege, isn’t it?

What is your favorite thing about Roger?

Oh my God, there are so many things! It’s the whole package—he’s handsome, virile and so intelligent, and he has good taste in everything. He’s someone I can really look up to. I’ve always needed a man I could look up to.

What does he do that is most annoying?

Hm, let me think. You know he doesn’t have any really annoying habits. I mean he snores, but everyone does that. I do wish sometimes he wouldn’t put so much time at work. He gets involved in some project where he works all kinds of hours and then I miss him. But I guess it’s like that in business. Funny, I never imagined I would fall in love with a businessman. I used to be kind of a hippy, you know? (Laughs) Life is so weird, isn’t it?

What is your favorite sexual talent of Roger?

Now that’s another one of those where-do-I-begin questions! I guess you know I love being spanked? He’s so good at it too, the way he varies the strokes, finds just the right time to increase the pressure. He plays me like an instrument. And then of course there’s the fucking! He has such control, he can go on forever. I never used to come as often as I do with him,

What is your favorite movie?

That’s changing the subject! Let’s see, ever hear of Jules et Jim? It’s a French movie, by Truffaut. It’s a very romantic movie, a love story.

You like love stories?

Sure, who doesn’t. I don’t mean the silly sentimental kinds, the Hollywood kind. More like the great love stories of literature.

Such as

Oh, let’s see, Wuthering Heights maybe.

Is Roger like Heathcliff?

(Laughs) Sure. Only he’s a little nicer, don’t you think?

What addiction can you not live without?

Apart from Roger you mean? Reading. I couldn’t live without books.

What kind of books?

Mostly literature, fiction, poetry too.

What would you like to come back as if you're reincarnated?

Boy you ask some weird questions! How can I imagine coming back as someone who doesn’t exist yet? Okay, let’s see. Hm. I guess I’d like to come back as a famous writer. I like to write but I don’t think I have much talent. But as long as we’re fantasizing why can’t I come back as a great writer? Of course I’d also want to meet someone like Roger who would dominate me. It could be Roger himself, but maybe that’s asking too much.

If your life were a book, what would you prefer the author not tell readers about you?

Now that’s an interesting one. Let me think. What don’t I want people to know? Well, I’m still struggling with the whole slavery thing. Only a few of our friends know. I mean I love it but not many people would understand. Sometimes I don’t understand myself.

What is it about this lifestyle that appeals to you?

“Lifestyle.” I like that. So what do I like about the slave “lifestyle”? I guess it’s that I love being controlled, of having to obey him. It’s funny because before I met him I thought of myself as a rebel. He laughed when I told him that. Human nature is so strange. By the way this interview is supposed to be anonymous, isn’t it?

Yes. Suppose it wasn’t though? Would you do the interview anyway?

You ask some tough questions, sir! I suppose I’d have to if Roger told me to, wouldn’t I? But he wouldn’t make me do something that would make me really uncomfortable. At least I hope not. But if he did? ... Well, anything else you want to know?

No. Thanks Eve.

Thank Roger, he’s the one making me do it. (Laughs) So where is this going to appear? The Village Voice?

No. I want to write a novel about a girl in this kind of Master/slave lifestyle relationship. I’ve been looking for the right girl as a model. Someone with intelligence, wit, personality. You fit the bill pretty well.

Well thanks for the compliment sir! So this is research, sort of?

You could say that.

Well, check back in a couple of years if you haven’t finished. My life is still a work in progress.

Thanks, I’ll do that.

Kinky Kiss And Tell: Ben Murphy from Under Control

With his hours at San Diablo General Hospital’s Emergency Room and his shift tending bar at the Diablo Blanco Club, Ben Murphy has very little free time. I was lucky to catch him before his shift started at the DBC, but I was extremely conscious of the occasional looks I received from the other patrons as I sat with him at the Club.

“I don’t want to keep you from work.”

He shrugged and leaned against the bar across from me. “No problem, Miss Qwillia. We won’t start getting busy for a while yet.” His smile was like a warm invitation to visit and lit his gray eyes with humor.

I stifled my curiosity about the Club and launched into the interview, “What is your favorite ice cream?”

I blinked, “Really?”

He nodded, “Yes, because I can add whatever I want to it depending on my mood.”

I thought about it. That made complete sense to me. “Next question, what is your favorite thing about Vance Justiss?”

Even as he talked, Ben was straightening and wiping down bottles and shelves behind the bar. “My favorite thing about V? He’s got my back. The man doesn’t know the word ‘quit’. If he thinks you need help — he’s there.”

“Like you?” I prompted.

He grinned but didn’t answer.

“What does Vance do that is most annoying?”

The grimace that pulled his lips down was fleeting before Ben answered, “He doesn’t give himself a break. He has high expectations for himself and when he misses, he gets angry at himself for it.” He shook his head and rolled his eyes. “Getting him down from that takes a lot and sometimes it tests me in ways I’m not sure I like going to.”

“How old were you when you lost your virginity?”

He leaned closer to answer. “My parents would be happy to know that I lost my virginity with a girl when I was sixteen. They’d be less than pleased to know that I was fifteen when I shared my first hand job with one of the guys from the football team.” An expression of both disgust and disappointment flashed across his features. “The fact that I’m attracted to men and enjoy sex with both men and women is what created the rift that made me leave my home in Virginia to make a life here in San Diablo.”

I remembered that and how much he hated the fact that they’d effectively cut him out of their lives for nearly twenty years. Hoping to dispel the unease, I jumped into the next question. “How did you meet Vance?”

“I led a Recon unit when I was in the Marines. Vance was assigned to my unit when our sniper was killed.” He gave me a wry grin. “I swear, the man could make me hard with a single look and that was dangerous in the military. But we had a good unit that relied more on action than orientation.”

“If there is something you could change about the first few weeks you knew Vance what would it be?”

“Nothing. He was an excellent soldier and fit into the unit immediately.”

“What about your personal relationship?”

Ben shrugged. “Not long after we met, he recognized the tension between my family and me and dragged me here.” He laughed. “I think he dragged the whole unit to his parents’ house at least once every time we had leave. His mom and dad loved having a house full of people. V was their only child and they had no other living relatives.”

“Didn’t he introduce you to the Diablo Blanco Club?”

“Yes. It was V who took me to the Club the first time. It was quite eye-opening and compelling. Plus I got to spend time with V.”

“What is your favorite movie?”

Ben laughed. “Don’t really have one. Between the ER at San Diablo General and the DBC, I don’t have a lot of downtime to watch movies.” He flashed a wicked grin. “And V is much more interesting to play with than a movie.”

“What is the craziest place you’ve had sex?”

The expression on his face was more of a grimace than a grin before he shrugged. “Nowhere. I’m not all that adventurous. A bed, the club, the shower — as long as I’ve got V, it works.”

“Which do you prefer? Coffee, tea, or…?”

“Coffee. The stronger the better.”

“What addiction can you not live without?”

He seemed to think about it for a moment. “The closest thing to an addiction I have is V. If I lost him, it wouldn’t kill me, but it wouldn’t be living either. I’d exist. That’s all.”

“Describe your favorite pair of shoes?”

A sly grin lifted his lips. “I have a pair of boots. Wore ’em on my last mission with Recon. They’re still the most comfortable boots for hiking.”

I hesitated before asking my question, pretty sure I knew the answer. “What do you fear most?”

“That V’s guilt over Aimee will tip him over the edge. He already has times when he’ll go days on cat naps because of the nightmares. I’m just not sure he’ll ever forgive himself for what happened.”

My own guilt gnawed at me, but I couldn’t tell him his fear was only going to get worse. I rushed on to ask, “What would you like to come back as if you’re reincarnated?”

He looked thoughtful then answered, “Haven’t really considered that. If I did come back, I’d hope to be with V, but I’d want to help people.”

“If you could be in a (different) book, which book would it be?”

“V and I have already been in a couple of the DBC books, I don’t need to be in anymore.”

I squirm thinking about the last story I’ll be telling. Not sure Ben will like it. Or if he’ll forgive me for what he and Vance will have to go through in the story. Determined to avoid spilling the beans, I ask the next question. “If your life were a book, what would you prefer the author not tell readers about you?”

He laughed again. “Not much about me is secret, but after twelve years in the Marines, I know how to keep my mouth shut.”

“Who, living or dead, would be your hero if you have one?”

His expression grows somber before he answers. “Aimeelya. She sent V home to me. I wish she hadn’t had to die to do it, but it was his promise to her that broke down the walls between us so I could be with V.”

“Do you think he loves Aimeelya?”

The look he gave me was indulgent. “Miss Qwillia, you know V and I both loved Aimee. She belonged to both of us from the day we found her tangled up in barbed wire on the edge of a mine field.”

“If she’d lived, what do you think would have happened?”

“Nothing unless she wanted it to. Her parents were good people. V and I respected them. Aimee was a handful, but there’s no doubt, if she’d lived, V’s convinced she would have been the perfect sub from us.”

In the time we’d been talking the room had begun to steadily fill up. I held my hand out to Ben. “Thank you for answering my questions.”

He surprised me by taking my hand and placing a gentlemanly kiss on the back of it. “My pleasure, Miss Qwillia. You should really plan to attend the Midnight Masquerade some time.”

“It’s invitation only.”

The look he gave me held secrets I wasn’t sure I wanted to know, but my fingers itched to write down. “Oh, I’m sure quite a number of members would be happy to send you an invitation.”

I laughed, “Hmm, I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not.”

He glanced over my shoulder toward the entrance. I turned and spotted Vance as well as Bryce and Richard entering. Turning back around I met his amused grin and added, “Definitely not a good thing.”

Making sure to stay as far away from the three Doms, I slipped out of the Club and into the warm Southern California evening.

Under Control (Diablo Blanco Club #2) is in the process of revisions and is slated to be re-released some time in June.

Kinky Kiss and Tell - Steve Jax from Playing Jax, by Jan Graham

Today we are interviewing Steve Jax, who became a bit notorious in the novel, Finding Angel by Jan Graham. Now Jan has written a book about Steve’s new relationship with Rhia. Here's what Steve had to say about his life and the impending release of a book based on his life.

What is your favorite thing about Rhia?
She’s passionate, and I don’t just mean sexually. It doesn’t matter whether it’s life in general, work, or me, she decides what she wants and commits 100% of her energy to making it happen. I love that about her, especially when that passion extends to me. *Steve flashes a sexy grin.*

What does Rhia do that is most annoying?
She’s passionate. *laughs* Yeah I know, the thing I love the most also annoys the hell out of me. It’s a strange dichotomy. You see if she thinks someone is being unfairly treated or in trouble she helps them out no matter what it costs her. It doesn’t matter whether she has to take on a large organization or an abusive partner, she’ll take a stand and that can place her in danger. I don’t like Rhia being in danger and I won’t let anyone mess with my woman. Having said that though, I wouldn’t want her to change, even though it can be annoying, I love that she has a strong social conscience.

How old were you when you lost your virginity?
*laughs loudly* That’s more a memory test than a question. I was in my late teens, but I can’t be more specific than that. I led a pretty wild sexual life when I was younger. You know what horny young men are like right? *gives a cheeky wink* My friends, the Shore brothers, and I used to share women, do the whole ménage thing, then we all got into BDSM around the same time, we trained as Doms together. Nowadays I’m monogamous. I found that once I met the woman of my dreams I didn’t want to share. When it comes to love, what’s mine is mine and no one else’s.

What is your favorite sexual talent of Rhia?
I won’t go into specifics out of respect for Rhia, but I will say she does have a very talented mouth.

Describe your favorite pair of shoes.
Rhia just brought these thigh high boots. Black leather, shiny, they lace up the front, have six inch heels and make her legs look as sexy as hell. They’re my favorite pair of shoes, but only when she’s wearing them.

What do you most fear?
Until recently I would have said I didn’t fear anything but now I know that’s not true. My greatest fear is losing the capacity to love. Life can be tough and for a while there I didn’t think I’d find love again…then I met Rhia.

What do you mean find love again?
I was married for a lot of years. My wife, Kathy, passed away and I thought that was the end for me. I didn’t think I’d ever find love as perfect as the two of us had. When I met Rhia I slowly came to understand that sometimes people do get a second chance at love. In a lot of ways what Rhia and I have is more perfect than anything I’ve ever experienced before. I consider myself an incredibly lucky man to have that chance again, meeting and falling in love with Rhia has changed everything for me.

What would you like to come back as if you're reincarnated?
I think I’d come back as a dragon, but if you want to know why, you’ll have to read the book when it’s released.

If your life were a book, what would you prefer the author not tell readers about you?
The size of my penis, not that I have anything to worry about when it comes to size but hell, a man needs to keep some things private.

If you'd like to read more of Tansy's story, you can visit's the author's website, Playing Jax goes on sale today at  Bookstrand.

Kinky Kiss and Tell - Damián Orlando from Nobody's Perfect, by Kallypso Masters

Today we are interviewing Master Damián Orlando, the resident sadist at the Masters at Arms Club in Denver. He first came to the attention of readers in Masters at Arms, the debut book of Kallypso Masters, when he rescued young Savannah Gentry from two abusive sadists and he went on to become a battle-scarred Marine. Savi Baker, once Savannah, has come back into his life, along with a daughter, Marisol. We caught up with him earlier this year and here's what Master Damián had to say:

What is your favorite ice cream?
Chocolate with cinnamon sprinkled on it. My mama used to make it that way. We didn't have a lot of money for fancy things growing up, but she always made everything seem more special.

What is your favorite thing about Savi?
She's a wonderful, loving mother. She didn't have it easy as a single mom, either. If I'd known, I'd have been there for her. But she has some serious fucking trust issues and I don't know that she'd have let me near Marisol. Till now.

What does Savi do that's most annoying?
Keeps things from me. If we're going to have a relationship, especially in the lifestyle, she has to stop hiding her feelings from me. I have to know everything she's thinking and feeling so I know when I've hit a trigger and why. And that woman has a lot of triggers. Being with her is like walking through a fucking minefield sometimes.

How old were you when you lost your virginity?
Eighteen, with a chica I met after I got out of juvie. She was into some serious pain and humiliation shit, which was a big turnoff for me. (He laughs.) Okay, well, I'm still not into humiliating a chica, but with the right woman and for the right reasons, I can get into delivering some serious pain now.

What is your favorite sexual talent of Savi's?
None of your business, no matter what you call this blog. Savi's a very private person, especially when it comes to her sexuality. That she's finally opening herself up to me is something too precious for me to exploit by talking about it with you.

What is Savi's weirdest habit?
Again, I don't want to embarrass her, but it's a coping mechanism she sometimes reverts to when she gets really stressed out or feels the walls closing in around her.

How did you meet?
Ahhh. (He smiles and looks away.) Well, we were both nineteen. I was working as a bus boy at a big-shot hotel in La Jolla in Southern California. She looked like a Barbie doll—only there was something sad in her eyes. Later…well, I found her in a dangerous situation and took care of her that night. We spent one perfect day together at my favorite beach near Laguna Beach. (His smile fades.) We lost track of each other for eight years. Ran into her a couple months ago when she was helping my niece get over a traumatic event. She's a great counselor to young abuse victims.

If there is something you could change about the first few weeks you knew Savi, what would it be?
Well, we really only knew each other little more than a day. If I'd known what was waiting for her in that Rancho mansion, I'd never have left her there that night with her sadistic father and his business partner. But she didn't let on what kind of hell she was living through. I didn't know any of that until recently, and am sure there's a lot more she hasn't told me—or that she doesn't even remember.

What is your favorite movie?
I like a lot of different types of movies. Depends on my mood. A good action film can help relieve some tension (when I can't work out throwing my whip). The Fast and the Furious kind of reminds me of my adopted family with Adam, Marc, and Grant, three Marines I served with in Iraq. We have that kind of tight bond, too. Shooter is another one I can relate to, because I also was a Marine sniper. (He looks away, smiles, then looks back.) Now, don't get the wrong idea. I'm a sadist, after all. But Marisol and I recently watched The Lion King. I'd seen it before with my niece and nephew, but this time, I really connected with the strong message about family and self-acceptance in that movie.

What is the craziest place you've had sex?
In a cave at Thousand Steps Beach, near Laguna Beach. That day with Savannah…Savi…eight years ago.

Which do you prefer? Coffee, tea, or ?
In the morning, black coffee. When I need energy later on in the day, I switch to Red Bull.

What addiction can you not live without?
The feeling of throwing a single-tail whip at a target. Nothing compares to landing the popper right where you intended and at the precise intensity you planned for the scene. The feeling is second only to hitting a target dead-on with my revolver or rifle.

Describe your favorite pair of shoes.
My black leather harness motorcycle boots.

What do you most fear?
Being unable to protect Savi and Marisol from danger. If anyone ever does anything to hurt them, I'll hunt them down and…as we Marines say, I'll get mine. But I'll do my damnedest to make sure no one gets that close.

What would you like to come back as if you're reincarnated?
I'm a predator. Definitely a big cat, like a panther, cougar, that kind of thing.

If your life were a book, what would you prefer the author not tell readers about you?
That I have a soft side when it comes to people I love. It would ruin my image. (He grins.)

Who, living or dead, would be your hero if you have one.
Adam Montague. My master sergeant straight-talked me at a very dark time in my life and kept me from taking a permanent solution to a temporary problem. In retrospect, I would say Marc D'Alessio also was a hero to me. He's the one who called Adam to that hospital bed to give me a wake-up call. There was a time when I wished Marc, my corpsman, had let me die on that rooftop in Iraq. But if he hadn't risked his own life for me, then I couldn't have been here last month when Savi and Marisol needed me. So, they're both heroes in my book.

Nobody's Perfect (Rescue Me #4), Master Damián and Savi's story, will be released in late May.

Kinky Kiss and Tell - Linda from Loaning Out Linda, by Steve Maser

Way back in 1989, Steve Maser had the opportunity to interview Linda, of Loaning out Linda fame. The interview has never been published. Until Now.

Linda arrived promptly for our interview, the downstairs buzzer ringing three minutes before the scheduled time, so by the time she arrived at the front door of my apartment, it was precisely two o’clock. Fifteen minutes earlier I had glanced out the window and saw a young woman answering her description standing on the sidewalk, appearing to be waiting for something or someone. We had never met; I had only recently made the acquaintance of Manfred Owen, her “owner” through our belonging to the same health club. One day after a strenuous game of racquetball he had invited me out for a drink. A few beers later we discovered our common interests. I was then engaged in writing a series of articles about the local S&M scene for a now defunct bondage magazine and was interested in interviewing submissive girls. When I learned that my erstwhile racquetball partner was the proud owner of a female slave, I requested permission to interview her, which he granted on condition he could review it before publication, to which stipulation I reluctantly acceded.

The young woman standing now in my doorway was the same one I had seen outside my window. Linda was a comely girl in her early twenties, approximately five foot three inches in height, with blonde hair worn in a ponytail. It was a typical hot July day in New York and she was by no means overdressed for the weather; a pretty pink halter top blouse covered a pair of nicely shaped breasts of more than adequate size, a narrow expanse of bare midriff separating it from the straight black skirt that terminated at mid-thigh. She was barelegged, red nail polish decorating her sandal shod feet. Her face was not similarly embellished, being free of makeup. There was also a curious medallion around her neck, about which more later. She was sexy, yet her face had an unexpectedly wholesome look, a girl next door quality that seemed strangely at odds with what I knew about her. She appeared apprehensive and I sensed that she was shy.

I held out my hand. “Hello Linda, I’m Steve Maser.”

“Hello, sir,” she replied, not quite looking me in the eye while extending a small, limp hand.

Letting go her hand I led her into the living room, directing her to sit on the sofa while I took a seat opposite. “Can I get you something to drink, coffee, tea, juice?”

“No thank you, sir,” she said.

“Do you drink coffee Linda?”

“Yes, sir. I just don’t want any.”

“That’s okay. By the way, you can call me Steve.”

“Uh, Manny told me to call you sir.”

“I’d prefer you didn’t.” Actually, I didn’t at all mind having her call me sir but wanted to test her response.

A look of confusion spread over her face. “Uh, I have to,” she said at last. “Manny told me to.”

“Well, we could make this our own little secret. I won’t tell if you won’t,” I said teasingly.

“I don’t have secrets from Manny, sir.” She said this with something approaching indignation.

“Very well, as you wish. By the way I saw you waiting outside before. Why didn’t you come up?”

“Uh, I was early and didn’t want to bother you.”

“I wouldn’t have minded. Why so early anyway? You don’t live that far away.”

She looked down at her feet. “Manny is very strict about punctuality.”

I wondered if she thought I would have reported her to Manny for being late. And if I had would he have punished her? I was tempted to ask but decided not to. Of one thing I was sure, this girl was the genuine article.

Pointing to the item around her neck I said, “That’s an interesting looking medallion. Can I see it?”

She took it off and handed it to me. It was indeed interesting. Embossed on its face was a very recognizable portrait of Linda in profile like you would see on a coin; surrounding it along the sides was the legend “Slave Linda - Property of Manfred Owen.”

I looked up and said, “Did you wear this on the way?”

“Yes, sir, but with the other side showing.”

I turned it around; the obverse side showed the image of a pair of fish with a strange looking symbol in the middle. I looked up inquiringly.

“That’s my sign, Pisces,” she responded.

“Manny had this made for you?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Do you wear this all the time?”

“No, sir.”

“Did Manny tell you to wear it today?”

“Yes, sir.”

I handed it back to her. “So does Manny believe in astrology?” I spoke ironically, knowing that my severely logical friend would have little patience with such things.

For the first time Linda smiled. “No, sir, but I do. I mean I don’t know if I really believe in it but I just like it. Manny makes fun of me because of it.” Then she giggled. I was pleased to see her becoming more at ease.

“So I bet you’re into a lot of New Age kinds of things.”

“Uh, like what?”

“I don’t know. You tell me.”

She paused for a minute, brows furrowed, then said rather solemnly, “Have you ever heard of reincarnation?”

I laughed. “Of course. And do you believe that when you die you’ll come back as somebody else?”

Her pretty bare shoulders moved in a shrug. “I don’t know, sir. I’d like to believe in it. I’ve done some reading about it.”

“Uh huh. And if you could be reincarnated, who would you like to be?”

For a moment she seemed stumped, then said, “It doesn’t matter, except ...” She hesitated.

“Except what?”

“Whoever I became, I’d still want to be Manny’s slave, I mean whoever he ended up being. I’d like to think of him being reincarnated as someone really great.”

“Great? In what way?”

“I don’t know. Maybe he could become President.” She giggled again.

My mind was boggling at the idea of a sex slave in the White House, although I had to admit her devotion to her Master was quite touching. I decided to change the subject. “You said you’ve done some reading about reincarnation. Do you read a lot?”

“Um, I don’t know about a lot. I like to read fiction, especially fantasy stuff.”

“What kind of fantasy stuff?”

“You know, like Lord of the Rings.”

“I see. Tell me Linda, how long have you been Manny’s slave?”

A slight flush appeared on her face. “Uh, almost three years, although I was living with him for a while before that.”

“So what do you like best about being a slave?”

Linda’s face assumed a serious expression as though she were an expert being consulted on a matter of importance. “Just knowing I’m under his control all the time,” she answered at last.

“Interesting. Does anyone else know you’re a slave?”

“Just my best friend Alice.”

“Manny prefers to keep it a secret?”

“Yes, sir.”

“That’s understandable. And what does your friend Alice think?”

“Um, I think she thinks it’s a little weird, but she’s very open minded.”

“Is she kinky too?”

“No, sir. But she knows everything about sex. She’s slept with lots of guys.”

“What does you friend do?”

“She’s an actress.”

“Uh huh. So-o. What does Manny do to you that you like best?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean of a sexual nature.”

Linda’s face once more assumed a nervous expression. I was struck by her shyness. Kinky girls who’d been around the block like she had weren’t usually this shy, even kinky sub girls. “Um, it’s when he uh, you know, it’s when he uh ... spanks me.” She said this almost in a whisper.

“What was that you said, Linda? I didn’t quite hear you.” This was the sadist in me kicking in. I had heard her perfectly well but was enjoying her embarrassment. It was really quite charming.

She replied this time in a clear voice. “I said I like it best when he spanks me.”

“Okay.” I was trying to think of a followup question when she interrupted me.

“Manny said you ...”

“He said I what?”

“That you liked to ... you know.”

“That I liked to spank girls?”

“Yes, sir.”

“That’s true. So you see you really have nothing to be embarrassed about. Now you say the thing Manny does to you that you like best is when he spanks you.”

“Yes, sir.”

“What about sex?”

“What do you mean?”

“Do you like spanking more than sex?”

She paused for a moment then said “I guess I do, but ...”

“But what?”

“I’m glad I don’t have to choose.” She started giggling again which pleased me. I sensed she was beginning to warm to me.

“So how do you like being spanked best?”

“What do you mean?”

“You know, any favorite positions, implements?”

“Oh. I like it best when he uses his hand. I also like the belt.”

“Yes, I’m fond of using the belt myself. Tell me Linda, have you ever been spanked by anyone other than Manny?”

Linda suddenly froze. She sat staring open-mouthed. I waited for a minute, but when she still said nothing, decided a show of firmness was in order.

“Linda, I asked you a question.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Were you ever spanked by anyone else?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Who was it?”

“It was ... a friend of Manny’s ... also a woman ... Do I have to talk about it?”

Suddenly she seemed on the verge of tears. I must have touched on some painful episode. I thought I understood though. Manny had kept this strangely innocent girl to himself. She was not part of the scene, perhaps didn’t even know of its existence. Then one day he had decided to share her with a friend. But I chose not to inquire further.

“No, that’s okay. I have enough here.” I closed my notebook. “Thank you Linda.”

The phone rang. I picked up the receiver. It was Manny. “Oh, hi.... Yes, the interview is going very well. In fact we’re finished.... Yes, she was very cooperative. I’ve got some excellent material for my article.... Uh, huh.... Uh, huh.... Really? Are you sure? ... Well, okay, if you’re sure it’s alright. Thank you! Of course I’ll tell you all about it.... Lunch Tuesday? Sounds good.... Yes, I know that place. Okay, see you then. What? Oh yes, of course.”

Was history about to repeat itself? I handed the phone to Linda. “It’s Manny. He wants to talk to you.”

“Hello sir,” she said over the phone. Soon her face turned pale; that by now familiar look of anxiety had returned. “Yes, sir,” she said glumly before putting the receiver down.

I smiled in an attempt at reassurance. “Well, you heard Manny. We don’t have to do this though if you’re not comfortable with it.”

She looked up at me, still more anxiously. “But I have to! Otherwise he’ll be angry!”

I stopped to consider the situation. Now I have my scruples. But Manny’s unexpected gambit had put us both in an awkward position. It appeared it would be worse for Linda if I refused. Then why deprive myself of an undoubted pleasure? Nonetheless I was determined to be as kind to the girl as possible.

“Yes, of course. Now don’t worry Linda, I’ve had lots of experience at this, as much as Manny. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Shall we do it here or in the bedroom? I suppose the bedroom is best. Let’s see, first the hand, then the belt ...”

And so we went into the bedroom. It turned out to be an unexpectedly pleasant afternoon for me. Under the circumstances I couldn’t really be angry when later Manny reneged on permission to print the interview.

Kinky Kiss 'N' Tell: Aidn from Pink Buttercream Frosting

Our Guest today is Lissa Matthews and she's interviewing her character, Aidn Greer, from her book, Pink Buttercream Frosting. I loved this book! Read it twice after I got it. Aidn is an interesting character and I'm pleased to share the interview with everyone.

One lucky commenter will win a copy of Pink Buttercream Frosting! The winner will be announced on May 15th.

What is your favorite ice cream? “Without a doubt, Rocky Road.”

What is your favorite thing about Bailey? “I can’t pick just one. She’s too complex at times and quite simple at others. That she’s a baker, though, ranks near the top of my list of favorite things. That I can see her smile whenever I wish, or touch her when she’s surrendered…”

What does Bailey do that is most annoying? She gets up in the middle of the night and plays in the kitchen. She knows I can’t stay in bed when I smell cake baking or chocolate melting. I get very little sleep nowadays.”

How old were you when you lost your virginity? “I believe, ladies, that is no one’s business.”

What is your favorite sexual talent of Bailey? “Now that really is no one’s business. However, in the spirit of fair play, I’ll just say she’s very oral in her talents.”

What is Bailey’s weirdest habit? I’ve not found anything I would consider weird, but I’m sure I haven’t discovered everything about her.”

How did you meet? “I first saw her in Abyss, a club we both frequented. I actually met her at a shopping mall. I was having lunch with my friend Robert, and Bailey walked by. When I had a moment, I said hello.”

If there is something you could change about the first few weeks you knew Bailey, what would it be? “I’d have spoken to her sooner. I’d have approached her in the club.”

What is your favorite movie? “Patriot Games with Harrison Ford.”

What is the craziest place you've had sex? “In the window display area of Bailey’s bakery.”

Which do you prefer? Coffee, tea, or…? “I don’t drink either one. I prefer good bourbon. I have beer on occasion. Mainly, it’s water.”

What addiction can you not live without? “Bailey.”

Describe your favorite pair of shoes. “I personally prefer to go barefoot when possible. Otherwise, I have a pair of black motorcycle boots I’ve had since I was in my twenties. I have had them re-soled I don’t know how many times, but the leather fits like a glove.”

What do you most fear? “A broken heart.”

What would you like to come back as if you're reincarnated? “I don’t believe in it.”

If you could be in a (different) book, which book would it be?  “I would like to meet Buck. He seems to have as much fun with his Caroline as I do with Bailey. And he has a sweet tooth like I do… Something about using cherry sauce on body parts.”

If your life were a book, what would you prefer the author not tell readers about you? “That I’m also afraid of heights and enclosed, very tight spaces.”

Who, living or dead, would be your hero if you have one? “I don’t have one in particular. I admire many people, living and dead. I think anyone who lives their life being who they are and not who they think others want them to be are worthy of our admiration. There are many who sacrifice themselves for others, but still more who hide behind falsities. I am a big fan of anyone willing to stand up for what they believe in.”

Pink Buttercream Frosting is available at SamhainAmazon, Barnes & Noble, and ARe

Kinky Kiss and Tell - Devon from Master Class, by Rachel Haimowitz

Today we are interviewing A-list film star Devon Turner, who grew even more famous when Rachel Haimowitz wrote a book about his very kinky relationship with Broadway darling Nicky Avery. Here's what Devon had to say:

What's your favorite thing about Nicky?
This may be surprising, but I love what a smartass he can be. Keeps me on my toes—some days he really makes me earn his submission. Also makes me laugh. And I love how he keeps such a firm grip on that part of himself, even when he’s down deep as deep goes.

What does Nicky do that's most annoying?
Mostly be a smartass. *laughs* What can I say; sometimes he takes it too far and needs a good whipping—or rather, needs to be sent to bed without one.

How old were you when you lost your virginity?
Oh god. *winces* This is a little embarrassing. But you’ve gotta understand, I grew up in show business; kids are pretty precocious there. I was *mumbles* fourteen. It may or may not have been a nonreciprocal blowjob in wardrobe.

What's your favorite sexual talent of Nicky?
Definitely the pain he can take. He’s a total slut for it and he’s the first to admit it—and beg for it too. It’s frankly remarkable how far he can go. God, what a turn-on.

What's Nicky’s weirdest habit?
He likes to make lace. I mean, like, we’re talking doilies, collars, that sort of thing. Crazy intricate stuff. Which I guess is one of the hazards of growing up in theater. Says it relaxes him, I dunno. But he sure is hot when he wears it, so I’m not complaining.

How is it living such an openly kinky lifestyle in the public eye?
We’ve both always known there’s no such thing as privacy in the professions we’ve chosen, and we feel so blessed to be able to do the work we want to do that that was always a price we were willing to pay. We never exactly planned to get out there and shout our kink from the rooftops, but we take no shame in it either, and decided together that it’d cause much less of a stir if we stood proud and open about our lifestyle right from the start, rather than having the paparazzi sneak up on us one day and find lascivious pictures of a play session splashed across the tabloids. So ever since we got married, we’ve been fairly open about the fact that we do engage in power exchange, though we’re generally fairly guarded about details. It actually feels really nice to think that maybe we can be role models for other folks out there who might worry what would happen if people found out what they like to do, or for folks who maybe think there’s something wrong with it or them. There isn’t—it’s a beautiful thing, really it is—and we’re both happy to have photographers crawling up our asses if it makes even one person more at peace with themselves.

Kinky Kiss and Tell - Sam from Safeword: Matte, by Candace Blevins

I'd been invited to Sam's house for a daytime pool party followed by an evening play party in their new dungeon. She suggested I come early for our interview, and we decided to swim while we talked. I recorded the conversation, so I wouldn’t have to worry about taking notes.

Safeword: Matte by Candace Blevins
“Where’s Ethan? I figured he’d be underfoot while we talked.”

“He’ll be here later,” she said, rolling her eyes. “He insists on not moving in until the wedding.”

“Ah, that’s right, but it’s only a month away, so it won’t be long until he’s here full time. Are you nervous?”

“Not about the wedding, or him moving in, but the honeymoon? Equal parts terrified and excited.”

I smiled. “Yeah, but the fear’s kind of like the icing on the cake, isn’t it? Makes it that much richer.” Her smile told me she agreed, and I continued. “How’s the training going? Will you be ready?”

“The training is…” she blushed and gave a nervous laugh. “Uncomfortable. There are these interim deadlines, with amazing rewards when I meet them, and a session with the stainless cane when I don’t. I’ve met them all but one so far, and don’t intend to miss another.”

“Ouch, I bet. You know I have some specific questions to ask, too. Shall we get some of them out of the way? We’ll start with an easy one – what’s your favorite ice cream?”

“I think Ethan already answered that one for me, but it’s mint chocolate chip. Even better if it has chocolate topping – you know, the stuff that goes on liquid and then hardens? Yummm.”

“What does Ethan do that’s most annoying?”

She bared her teeth in obvious frustration. “The man organizes the freakin' dishwasher. The plates have a special place, each type of glass has its own section, the big spoons have their division, little spoons in another."

I couldn't help but smile at her affectionate exasperation as she threw her arms up and continued. "What difference does it make where they are? I make sure the plastic stuff goes on top, but other than that, I just stick it in and turn it on. I caught him pulling everything out and putting it all back in last week, and he tried to explain how you can get more in doing it his way, that my way we’ll have to wash twenty percent more often. I’m sure it’s because he knows so much about packing a moving truck, but still, it just seems so persnickety.”

She swam a few strokes closer to me, smiling. “I informed him the dishes are his job from here on out. Oddly enough, he’s okay with that. So, maybe it’s not such an annoying trait after all, if it means I never have to clean the kitchen again.”

“That’s right, the two of you are 24/7, but only when it comes to sex, so he can’t insist you do it his way.”

“Yeah. He can demand anything sexual at any time, as long as it doesn’t interfere with work. While we’re having sex or in a scene I have to follow instructions and obey the rules, but once the scene and aftercare are over, so’s the power exchange – and dishwashers have nothing to do with sex.”

“What’s Ethan’s best sexual talent?”

“Well, his mouth is pretty amazing, but his best talent is his ability to give me what I need, with no apologies. He can manhandle me into bondage, and can even have his way with me without using restraints. No matter how hard – or how smart – I fight; he can take me. I’d never found someone into kink who could handle me before, and it’s something I needed before I could submit all of myself – body and mind. But, best of all, once he’s got me where he wants, he’s not afraid to deliver the kind of pain I need. I have no problems with his sadistic streak, but sometimes his dominance is hard for me to deal with. I’ve never faced the kinds of expectations for my submission he demands, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. If it were easy, I’d probably get bored with it eventually, and I don’t see that happening. He’s more than earned my submission, and I appreciate a challenge.”

“What do you most fear?”

“Umm, my honeymoon?” She laughed. “No, not really, but I have to admit it’s pretty much front and center in my thoughts these days. Hmmm, hang on, let me think about it a minute.”

She dove under the water, swam the length of the pool, and freestyled back, wiping the water from her face before answering.

“I think my top two fears are pretty close to a tie. I fear something happening to Ethan, of course, but he’s so big and strong and healthy, it doesn’t seem likely, you know? It’s up there, but hard to put in first place, since my brain refuses to seriously consider it. I’m terrified of the possibility of losing my independence, though. Seven or eight years ago, my spinal cord was irritated during a fight, and I lost the use of my arms and legs for a few hours. Once the doctors got the swelling down I could move everything again, but it was terrifying. I need to fight, run, bike, hike. My identity is built around being able to take care of myself.”

“Yes, but I know how strong your willpower is – you’d deal with it, and find a way to make the best of it, once you got over being pissed. How does Ethan handle your independence? Do the two of you clash over him wanting to keep you safe?”

“Not often. He respects the fact I can take care of myself, and most of the time, lets me. I have a case right now, a battered wife leaving a jerk of a man. She’s staying somewhere secret, with the judge’s okay for her to keep the location of their children from him, based on documented injuries to the mom and the oldest son, and testimony about the dad’s anger issues.”

Sam had floated to the edge of the pool as she talked, and now reached for her lemonade, taking a sip before continuing. “He approached me while I was eating lunch on the courthouse lawn -- threatened me, trying to get me to tell him where she’s living. When threats didn't work, and I obviously wasn't scared of him, the jerk tried to hit me, but I blocked his punch and put him on the ground." Her face lit up, a happy smile with a touch of sadism. "And held him there until police arrived."

She shrugged. "Turned out okay. I wasn't hurt, and the idiot slam-dunked my case, since there were witnesses. Ethan’s not at all happy about the situation, but he’s letting me handle it my way – through the police and courts.”

“Wow, I imagine Ethan’s chomping at the bit, though. If it weren't work related, do you think he’d still stay in the background?”

“I’m not sure, actually. I don’t think he’d beat him up, but I believe he’d insist on having a conversation with him. Ethan can be pretty intimidating when he’s not trying. When he makes an effort to be scary?” She shuddered. “Even when we’re playing around, and I know he won’t hurt me, my insides quake with fear.”

A deep male voice startled me. “Nice to know I have that effect on you, Samantha darling.”

Sam’s head snapped around, her smile lighting up her face. “It’s no secret you’re scary when you want to be, but I know you’re really just a big teddy bear.”

Already in swim trunks, he walked down the steps into the water, pulling her to him and giving her a quick kiss before looking my direction. “I assume it’s okay for me to be here for the rest of the interview?”

“Of course, I was just about to ask the last two questions.” I said, turning to Sam.

“If your life were a book, what would you prefer the author not tell readers about you?”

“Oh, that’s easy; I wouldn’t want anyone outside of the scene to know I’m submissive. Vanillas have this crazy idea that submitting to someone means you’re weak. Drives me crazy.”

“Yeah, that's one of my pet peeves, too. Final question: Before you met Ethan, your goal was to develop a relationship with enough trust to give up your safeword. I know you and Ethan have been at odds on the subject, and the wedding is only a month away. Have the two of you resolved this, yet?”

Ethan growled under his breath, and Sam rolled her eyes. Ouch, maybe I should have asked before Ethan arrived.

“I’m ready to give it up," Sam said, "but the big lug behind me won’t agree to it. He says if I don’t want to safeword, I shouldn't’ say it.”

She pulled out of his arms, swam closer to me. “He’s being deliberately obtuse, refuses to understand I don’t want to have it available. At all.”

He grinned at her, affection and mischief lighting his eyes. “Oh, I get it, but I won’t agree to it until I can be sure I’m up for the responsibility.”

Switching his focus to me, he said, “Aren’t you missing someone? You’re staying for the party, right?”

“Wouldn’t miss it for the world. His Highness got drafted into taking our youngest to rehearsal this morning. He'll drop her off at his mom’s when it’s over and should be here shortly after everyone else. Are Tyler and Viv still coming?” Sam answered from the diving board. “Yes, and Dana’s coming, too. She pulled away from all of us after Garnet died, but Kirsten told me if I invited her and made it clear she could bring guests, plural, that she’d probably come. She’s bringing three men with her, can you imagine?”

I smiled. “Oh yeah, I can imagine.”
